Slate Roofing in Ashfield
Inner West Council's statement for the Victoria Square Heritage Conservation Area, shared by Ashfield and Summer Hill, names original roof cladding of slate for the Victorian period, and slate or unglazed terracotta tiles for the Federation period. If your roof is in that area, the original cladding is part of how the Council describes it.

Slate Roofing around Ashfield
The Council's statement lists, among the key elements: original roof forms with original cladding of slate or corrugated steel (Victorian period); slate or unglazed terracotta tiles (Federation period); unglazed terracotta tiles (Inter war period); and original chimneys. The statement is published on Inner West Council's website under the running head Draft Comprehensive Inner West DCP 2016, and the Council's DCP page lists the Comprehensive DCP 2016 as the current plan for Ashfield, Croydon and Summer Hill. It does not say that any particular house is inside the area.
The statement groups roofs by the period of the house, so which cladding is original depends on when the house was built. Ask the Council whether the property is in the area, and which period it belongs to, before slates are stripped.

Permits and Inner West Council rules
Whether a roof job here needs approval is for the council to confirm: repairing or replacing non-structural roof cladding is exempt development under the state's code, but not on a heritage item or in a heritage conservation area.
